Miles Donahue: The Bug

Miles Donahue is a triple threat,  playing alto sax, flugelhorn and trumpet on this mix of tunes with Jerry Bergonzi/ts-ss, Mike Stern/g, Rim Ray/p, Tamir Shmerling/b and Ralph Peterson-Larry Finn/dr. On alto, Donahue forms a hip front line with Bergonzi on the driving “Innocent Bystander” while on horn the two float softly on the tender “Clifford.” Things get real interesting when Mike Stern joins in for a handful of tracks and shows he’s completely recovered from his fractured arms. He rocks out with Donahue on “Swamp House,” goes funky with Donahue’s trumpet during the title track and gets hip during “Hawthorne Hideaway.” The leader sits out and lets Ray direct traffic on the lovely “Leaving Home” while the band skates together on the waltzy “In Three.” Rewarding post bop.
