Tenor saxist Maria Grand has honed her skills with the likes of Steve Coleman and Vijay Iyer, so she knows her way around the intricacies of post-bop jazz. Here, she leads a team of Roman Filiu’/as, David Bryant/key, Rashaan Carter/eb and Craig Weinrob/dr through a series of free wheeling originals. She uses her voice to intriguing effect, as a multi tracked intro to the loose “Short Sun” as well as the dreamy indie “North.” Her thick tenor teams with some explosive drum work on “Land of Living” as well as during a gorgeous duet during part of the intricate “South,” featuring Bryant in some intuitive environments and Weinrob with a restless spirit. Kinetic and abstract, the music is intuitive and confident.
