Scandinavian Carsten Dahl is best known as a lyrical jazz pianist, so this album of thirteen pieces with him at the harpsichord is an intriguing stunner. Seeing the instrument in the studio, Dahl records it on a whim, with all of the songs ranging between just under two minutes to a bit over five, all numbered. Hints of baroque, Bach and Vivaldi pop up on some of the pieces, while at other times moods akin to castles, dungeons and Mrs. Havesham’s ghostly dining room create dramatic moods with long shadows. A dance or two, and even possibly a tarantella swing along nicely. I just wonder what kind of a party this could be a background for?
