Bill Simenson Orchestra: Big Alpaca

Minnesota-based trumpeter and composer Bill Simenson leads his big band through a collection of rich originals that sound like they were made for vintage movies of the film noir era. The reeds get bluesy for Ted Godbout’s piano on “Pete’s Waltz” while they create a hazy mood on the 3 pack a day “Mastodon”.” Dave Schmalenberger’s drums rumble under the grey hues of Clay Pufahl’s tenor sax on “Wheelman” while his brushes skate under the leader’s horn on the hip title track. All that’s missing on the smoky “New Shoes” and punchy “The Dune” are guest appearances by Alan Ladd, Dan Duryea  and Gloria Graham, as these tunes ooze with the haze of smoke rings, fedoras and wide lapels
