The Labtrio consists of Lander Gyselinck/dr, Bram De Looze/p-key and Anneleen Boehme/b and on this album they mix funky and frisky originals with some clever interpretations of Bach. Of the latter, Gyselinck creates a hip herky-jerky New Orleans groove on the funfest “variation 15” while his brushes are nimble for De Looze’s suave ivories and Boehme’s thoughtful musings on “Fugue.”
The originals like to change moods, as some spacey keys slowly veer into an acoustically swinging team on “Elevator” and the introducing bass and drums get frisky on an intuitive “Inside Now” and the conversational “Amnesiac.” Ominous overtures turn to aggressive piano and drums on “Ihor” while the team gets melancholy and subdued on “Lumen.” Creative communications.
