Jazz vet pianist Hal Galper has had an impressive career as a sideman for the likes of Chet Baker, Stan Getz and Cannonball Adderley, never quite receiving the accolades he deserves. He shows his long hewn charms with a post bop team of Nathan Bellott/as, Dean Torry/b and David Frazier/dr for a handful of swinging yet lyrical pieces in concert format. The selection of songs for the 2016 gig reflect the range of the artist as well, with a soft and harmonic “Goodbye” featuring Bellott’s warm horn, and a Ornette Coleman tribute, “O’s Time” bopping along with a herky jerky cadence provided by Frazier. Galper himself drinks deeply from the McCoy Tyner well with some rich soloing and chord work as the team stretches out for 17 minutes on “Speak With A Single Voice” and the team bops with delight with Frazier snapping like snow peas on ”Scufflin’.” Four pieces done in the course of an hour’s event could have been an experiment in self-indulgence, but Galper shows his veritas by keeping it lyrical, comprehensible and above all, enjoyable.
