A.J.Croce: Just Like Medicine

Son of famed singer/songwriter Jim Croce, A.J.Croce comes across as a mix of his dad with a leathery appeal akin to JD Souther. He plays piano and organ as well, with his voice ranging from a gruff leatherneck on the rootsy “Gotta Get Outta My Head” to a sub-toned hush on a folksy “ I Couldn’t Stop.” Some Memphis horns and swampy guitar by guest Steve Cropper make “The Heart that Makes Me Whole” a funky delights, and Vince Gill adds some C&W to the boogie-ing “Name of the Game.” The rhythm team of David Hood/b, Colin Linden/g and Bryan Owings/dr deliver a hip New Orleans snap on “Full Up” and Croce sounds convincing on the gospel-toned “Hold You.” Hard to not appreciate this guy’s calloused hands on this blue collar collection
