The team of Alex Buck/dr-elec, Bruno Migotto/b and Edson Santanna/p create an album that feels like they have deep dna for a hard bop trio, but want to feel relevant to modern ideas of experimentation. Almost all of the songs include either an intro or middle section of intuitive interplay, as “3 Chances” and “Koan n.2” feature electronics and free from interplay. Yet even on rumbling drums, the trio can pop the clutch and dig deep as on the snappy “Curacao Mobile” and swinging “Maxixe,” both of which start out as artsy, but end up bopping with delight. The team shows it can flex muscles as on the tensile and Monkish Mobililibre” and Santanna is particularly strong on the rippling “Mobile Saudade.” Two interesting directions pulling for influence.
