Passafire: Longshot

Did you know that there was a genre termed “progressive reggae”? Just goes to show you that there’s always something to learn. Passafire claims to be one of the pioneers of the style, and while the team of Ted Bowne/g-voc, Will Kubley/b-voc, Mike DeGuzman/key-g-voc and Nick Kubley/dr show their allegiance to the Jamaican lilt on vintage pieces like the peppy “Bright” and a bluesy “Longshot,” they also add elements of other sounds. For example, a dash of 70s rock from “Oh, What A Night” is felt on “Growing Up,” and Metallica head banging is electrified and thunderous on “Drifter” and “Blow.” Synth sounds from prog rock are infused during “Gone Yesterday,” but most successful is the acoustic guitar feel on the easy swing of “Fireside.” Going forward, or looking back?
