Hailing from Florida, alto saxist Daniel Dickenson got some attention when he got a Downbeat award as an Outstanding Soloist back in 2011. Here, he shows his chops with a rotating team of Ulysses Owens Jr/dr-prod, Joshua Bowles-Christian Sands/p, Reuben Rogers/b and a horn team of Mercedes Beckman/bs, Juan Rollan/ts, Alphonso Horne/tp, Barry Greene/g and Michael Dease/tb. The band specializes in muscular post bop and modal, with Dickinson’s acerbic alto fitting in well on the dramatic “Cry of the Wolf” and kinetic “Redemption.” Bowles’ piano ebbs and flows with the leader on the energetic “Noumenal World” and Rogers delivers a slithering sidewinder groove on “Dandelion Wine.” Dickinson shows warmth along with rich lines by Barry Greene on the pulsating “Exodus” and a take of “Darn That Dream” has Dickinson at his most lyrical. Shades of Jackie McLean swing and swang this assertive session.
