Swinging charts are delivered by director and saxist Jeff Rupert as he directs a big band through a dozen pieces. Warm toned tenor Harry Allen guests on a number of tracks such as the floating “Dreamsville” and joyful waltz “June Song” while he gets a dose of the blues on “This is My Lucky Day” and teams up with the sax section of -Luke Stribling/as, Andy Garcia/as-ts, Melanie Castro/ts-cl and Saul Dautch/bs on a Four Brothers-inspired read of Billy Strayhorn’s “Raincheck.” Some Gil Evansy muted horns blossom on “Triste” while Mudel Honore’s B3 and Ryan Waszmer’s guitar smolder as the rhythm team shuffles on the title track. Rupert shows creative ideas as he creates lush tapestries for Alan Lewis’ flugelhorn on a delightful and moving “The New Creole Love Call.” Lots to like for fans of jazz orchestras with a punch.
