Chris Greene plays tenor and soprano sax along with Damian Espinosa/p-key, Marc Paine/b and Steve Corley/dr on a wide ranging release that mixes tradition with forward looking. The team hits a hip CTI soul groove with Espinosa on keyboards on a grooving pieces “Here To Help” and the funky “Crossover Appeal.” A bit of funky reggae gets thrown in on a clever read of Horace Silver’s “Nica’s Dream” while Greene’s tenor gets greasy on the R&B delight “Blues for Dr. Fear” and the bluesy ‘Wildcat.” The rhythm team gets kinetic on the angular “Thunder Snow,” but Greene saves the best for last when he pulls out the soprano and glows in the dark on a gorgeous read of Billy Strayhorn’s “Day Dream.” The only caveat is a bit of foul language while tries to be relevant, but is more distracting from the good sonic vibes.
