Bill Frisell & Thomas Morgan: Small Town

Quiet and delicate moods abound on this meeting between guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan. The two use sounds and space to almost ambient effect throughout the album, forming sonic wallpaper on the ambling title track and slightly bluesy “It Should Have Happened A Long Time Ago” while “Poet/Pearl” mixes Morgan’s resonant bass with gentle back porch  picking. Some country flavored tones give a tribute to the Carter family on “Wildwood Flower” and delicate west coast cool tones bop along during “Subconscios Lee.” As with all things Frisell, a 60s theme pops up, this time a rewarding take of “Goldfinger,” and while the tempo of these songs seems to remain constant, the quiet variations keep the mood clever.
