Brazilian jazz masters Felipe Salles/ww, Chico Pinheiro/g, Tiago Costa/p, Bruno Migotto/b and Edu Ribeiro/dr get together for a swinging South American session. Just about everyone contributes a tune, with the shadowy “Yesterdays” being the sole exception. The songs are full of rich soul, with Salles’ tenor thoughtful over the rumbling percussion on “Cobalt Blue” and gliding with Costa’s piano on “Sinuosa.” Pinheiro’s guitar work is sublime on the thoughtful and dream “Mathias” while the title track is a joyful samba with Salles’ flute dancing on the sand. Muscles are flexed on ”Jack and the Goblin Brohter while piano and bass are nimble enough for Salles’ clarinet to tip toe around on “ Varanda.” Usually all star games can be perfunctory, but this one has all the stars shining brightly.
