Rebecca Martin & Guillermo Klein: The Upstate Project

Here’s a cozy and intimate delivery by vocalist/guitarist Rebecca martin and vocalist/keyboardist Guillermo Kelien. Along with the deft teamwork of Brad Mehldau’s  Larry Grenadier/b and Jeff Ballard/dr, pastel messages are delivered with moods ranging from impressionistic to folksy. Martin has a indie/folksy voice on the gentle pieces like “Just As Today” and Klein’s piano is a soft rice pilaf as he sings along on “Like Every Other Day.”

Grenadier provides a rich bass line on his own “In the Nick of Time”, while Meldau’s To Make The Most of Today” has a misty feel with Ballard’s cymbals coaxing the piece along. A clever read of Kurt Rosenwinkel’s “Freedom Run”  teams well with the troubadour ‘d take of Bill Frisell’s “Hold On.” Lots of pastels are brush on with ‘elan here.
