Noah Preminger makes political statements without words as he uses his tenor sax with his team of Jason Palmer/tp, Kim Cass/b and Ian Froman/dr through a mix of provocatively titled originals and covers. The team does a free bop read of Bob Dylan’s “Only a Pawn in Their Game” as Preminger sighs into his Selmer while Palmer is loose and sweet during George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth(“ and the two get bluesy and thick on the anthem “ A Change Is Gonna Come.” Original Blue State specials include “The 99 Percent” which is a deep grooving delight with a rich tenor tone and a drum-led rumble on “Mother Earth.” Cass’s bass dances on the gentle swinger “Just the Way it Is” and the team changes gears in a nano second on “ Women’s March.” While the titles may not get approval from the present administration, both parties can agree to the sonic quality. Tone always wins out over message.
