Consisting of Anthony Argatoff/as, Nick Lavkulik/g, Noah Sherman/dr, Peter Bull/b,key and Natalie Wong/v, Dog Leg Dilemma performs seven richly conceived Bull compositions that sway from post bop to heavy metal. At times, the band sounds like the circus is in town with Spike Jones franticness on “Equestrian Playtime” and the herky jerky “This Must BE Why I Came Home” while Argatoff’s alto cuts a slithery serpentine line on “Part 2 Not This Time” and goes soft with Lavkulik on “Part 1 Are You Sure About This.” Clever melodies are in abundance, with the team bopping while Sherman hits hard on “Roll with the Hunches” and the team gets brash on the metal-driven “Nothing Always Doesn’t Change.” Ironic titles, but rewarding music.
