Saxist Troy Roberts brings is tenor and soprano saxes to team up with the muscular post bop team of Silvano Monasterios/p, Robert Hurst/b and Jeff “Tain” Watts/dr for a collection of originals and some covers. Of the latter, the team shows its swing chops as Roberts’ tenor digs deep on “Take the ‘A’ Train,” hits hard on an assertive read of “Bernie’s Tune” and his soprano shines over Watts’ deft brushes on ”Rivera Mountain.” The rhythm team is as nimble as a track relay squad on the tricky “Decoration” and is deft as Hurst leads with a rivulet on “Trams” and Monasterios displays soft hands on “Pickapoppy.” I’d hate to arm wrestle with these guys, as the muscles really flex on “Boozy Bluesy.” Lots of adrenaline flying around!
