Trombonist JS Sanford leads a flexible team of Mike Baggetta/g, Dave Ambrosio/b and Russ Meissner/dr though an elastic collection of originals sans one. Sanford has a rich and attractive tone, and uses it in a variety of settings, as Baggetta’s guitar supplies straight-ahead lines as well as edgy framework on the settings. The one cover, John Scofield’s “Easy For You”, floats like a morning haze with Baggetta’s strings slithering through the mist, while “Jan-Chan on Patrol” his a chase scene that zig-zags between ‘bone and strings. The team bears down on a deep groove supplied by Meissner on “DumPac” as the leader swoops like a pelican over its prey, and the team creates some pastoral atmospheres on the lovely “Forest Hills.” The unorthodox team supplies rich colors and fragrances on this collection of clever shadows.
