Ian Faquini & Paula Santoro: Metal Na Madeira

Modern Brazilian sounds mix with traditional samba on this fresh and sophisticated release by vocalist Paula Santoro and guitarist Ian Faquini. The remaining support mixes and matches, sometimes with simple accordion, other times with percussion and bass, and even once with horns and background vocals. Santoro’s acoustic guitar strums droplets of dew, while Santoro’s earthy soto voice ranges from rapid gusts of wind as on “Seria” as Rafaek Barata’s ride cymbal drives the music forward with Scott Thompson’s bass. More intimate apparel is present as bluesy strums on “Dorival Pescador” with extra vocal support by Faquini” the tranquil “Aos Olhos Da Tarde” and the honey’d sweet “Pnheivi-Pinheivi with sublime clarinet from Harvey Wainapel. Traditional folk sounds arrive on “Vasta Ilha” while a full ensemble hustles and bustles on the hectic title track. Through it all, Santoro draw you in with her flowing yet clear voice. A rewarding future step for bossa and samba fans.
