The classic Benny Goodman Quartet is brought back to life on this swinging set with clarinetist Felix Peikli, vibraphonist Joseph Doubleday and a simpatico team of Russell Hall/b-acc and Ralph Peterson Jr/dr. Peikli has a warm and fluid tone, and shows impressive chops on these ten classic Swing Era pieces. Charles Turner adds rich vocals for a warm read of “La vie en Rose, besides that Peterson gets bopping on “Swedish Pastry” and Peikli goes toe to toe with Sportiello on a rapid fire “The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise.” Doubleday’s vibes bounce with delight on a h ip “Flying Home” and glisten on “Pure Imagination. These songs from almost four score and seven years ago still excite and create sparks in the right hands, and these two gents make music sound more fresh in 3-4 minute bites than a score of 8 minute navel gazings on ECM.
