Andrew Van Tassel brings post bop sounds with his alto and soprano saxes with a core team of Julian Shore/p-key, Edward Perez/b and Colin Stranahan/dr as well as a handful of guests. On alto, he and the band bring in guitarist Ben Eunson and bass clarinetist Michael Thomas for some richly brewing sounds over the restless rhythm on pieces like “High Holborn” and the gentle cadence of the dreamy”Goodnight Moon.” On soprano, he and the regulars go passionate on the waltzy “It’s Where You Are” as Perez’s bass delivers a rich pulse. Shore’s piano is solemn on the mellow “Hold Still” and goes soul-cool on keyboards on the spacy “Quiet Now” while “Death of a Spatula” includes Thomas for the straight clarinet to modal effect. Brainy with a heart.
