Lorraine Klaasen: Nouvelle Journee

South African vocalist Lorraine Klaasen delivers a celebrative album that mixes rhythms and melodies from all parts of the world on this upbeat album. Her voice is strong, optimistic and elastic; teamed with Mongezi Ntaka/g, Noel Mpiaza/dr, Assane Seck/g, Sebastian Andre Whiteman/b, Cedric Dind-Lavoi/b, Medad Ernest/key and a group of background vocalists, she lets you in on the festivities.

The title track has a two stepping Zydeco feel, while Ntaka’s lithe guitar lilts sound West African as the voices chant on “Ke Tshepile Bafatsi” and “Izani Nonke.” The team gets into a reggae mood on “Home Sweet  Home” and the team shows it’s R&B grove on the bluesy “Township Memories” and the hip “Thulandivile.” Most jazz is “Babalazi” and the ballad “Polokwane” where Klaasen’s earthy voice shows its strength.” It’s hard not to feel encouraged with the visceral mix of percussion, voice and guitars percolating so beautifully. A sonic shot to the arm.
