Vocalist Brenna Whitaker veers between various generations of styles on this soulful album. On one hand, she seems to have an affinity for 50s R&B, as she wails along on the doo wopper of “Misty Blue”, goes noir and dramatic on “You Don’t Own Me” and gets the juke joint jumping as she has fun on “I Can’t Hear A Word You Say.” On the other hand, she has a modern grown on “Love Back” and the synth loping bass on “Anyone Who Had A Heart” has her in a streetwise mood. The strings on “A House Is Not A Home” allows her to get dramatic, and she’s husky and full bodied with a rich vibrato on “Love Back.” While looking for a home to live in, her short term stays are quite rewarding. Can’t wait to see which band comes in concert.
