Amina Claudine Myers: Sma Rou-Songs From My Soul

Here’s a disc that will hit you where you need to be reached.

AMina Claudine Myers sings and plays  piano, while Rene McLean joins in on some recitations on a deeply delivered and interpreted collection of spirituals.

The album opens with an unexplained  melding of cultures and faiths, as an Arabic call to prayer joins with “Steal Away” and a prayer in the Senegalese language. After that, it’s all heartfelt sighing, singing and dealings with God as Myers’ piano delivers a harrowing “Crossings” , but is calm and resigned as she sings along with the ivories on “Nobody Knows The Trouble I See.” Her singing delivery makes you feel you’re in a solitary moment of devotion with her, as she sounds intimate on “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child” and comforted on “My Soul’s Been Anchored In The Lord.” They don’t teach you this kind of stuff in school anymore. You only get it by being confronted by the Burning Bush!
