Kevin Bowers plays drums and acoustic guitar on his compositions in a sleek and subtly swinging album. He joins together to create a soft and swift groove with Kevin Bachmann-Zebadiah Briskovich/b, Dave Grelle/key and Jordan Heimburger/g while the horns of Aaron Chandler, Adam Hucke and Ben Reece veer in and out with vocalists Andy Shadburne, Paige Brubeck, Andy Coco, Nathan Hershey and Erminie Cannon.
Gently flowing pulses team with flute and voice on “Without A Sound” and the poppish “Lady Day Fortune” mixes piano with attractive vocals. Some cabaret moods are delivered with soft horns on “Last Night In June” and a festive street party celebrates on “Imagination Voodoo.” Bowers himself seems to like the marching grooves, snapping everyone to attention on “Ground Motion” and “Forward Rhythm Agenda,” but his heart is on the seductive, with a the sensuous samba “Two Vagabond Lovers” delivered in English and French to bookend the charming album.
