The unorthodox trio of Jonah Udall/g, David Leon/as and Alec Aldred/tp-fh create some original and alluring moods on this Baker’s Dozen of originals. A rhythmless trio means that someone has to do extra work, and Udall’s guitar supplies the pulse in a variety of ways. He delivers a samba mood on “Horseback In Faded Grey” and a Nashville twang on “Wanderer’s Rondo,” while gentle strums o “Awake With Start” deliver a pastoral mood. As for the horns, Aldred has a sweetness akin to vintage Kenny Dorham, fragrant during “On The Road” and tasty with “Trio Tune For Tal.” Leon’s alto is soft and supple, floating on “Quiet Spaces” and taming with some rich framework on “Me vs. Me”. Atmospheric, but with something to say.
