While the back cover shows Daniel Bennett holding a flute, alto sax and oboe, he actually is not heard on the double reed instrument, but on the clarinet instead on this album. He also plays piano on this succinct album with Nat Janoff/g, Eddy Khamovich/b and Matthew Feick/dr, and the mood mixes hints of 70s rock wit funky jazz.
His alto sax has a rich brightness to it, and he has fun with the rock riffed groove of “John Lizared Comes Home” and the rock steady linear line with Janoff on “Doctor Duck Builds A Patio. Hints of Bachman Turner Overdrive are felt on Janoff’s chords as Bennett takes his flute aboard on “Animals Discussing Life Changes” and a dash of Jethro Tull is palpable as flute and guitar echoes muse together on “Paint The Fence.” Some electronic atmospheres create a bohemian mood as Michael Hermon recites a poem on “Little Disappointments of Modern Life,” so just about every base is covered on this clever release.
