Warm sounds and grooves abound on this rech and accessible mainstream session by Dan St. Marseille. He plays tenor and clarinet as he teams up with the solid group of Claudio Roditi/tp-fh, Bill Cunliffe/p, Roger Shew/b and Paul Kreibich/dr. The team delivers a classy samba read of “You Stepped Out of a Dream” and swings from the hip with Marseille’s ebullient tenor on “Invitation.” The team shows it’s bop chops with a cleverly arranged “Anthropology” which has Roditi as crisp as Armani lapels, and Cunliffe is as gracious as Lilly Palmer with St. Marseille on “Body and Soul .”
Gry Foster/as-cl and Chris Dawson/p drop in for a couple of the leader’s originals, and things get pretty impressive on St. Marseille’s lively “It’s What You Think” and some clever clarinet work on the “Sweet Georgia Brown” variationduring Jimmy Knepper’s “Bertha the Dragonness.” Lots to like here!
