Always adventurous, Rare Noise Records releases two disparate albums connected only by the fact that they are trying something new.
WorldService Project is made up of Dave Morecroft/key-voc, Tim Ower/sax, Raphael Clarkson/tb-voc, Arthur O ‘Hara/b and Harry Pope/dr. They come across like a modern version of progressive rockers, somewhere between King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and heavy metallers like Slayer. Loud and proud material such as “ Flick the beanstalk” and the thunderous “Fuming Duck” have Pope hitting the skins until they beg for mercy. Clarkson’s languid trombone eventually leads to thrashing and sp lashing while eerie and spacey keyboards noodle around on “Murano Faro.” Turned up to number 11.
On the other hand, New Zion, made up of Jamie Saft/key-g-b, Cyro Baptista/perc-voc, Brad Jones/b and Craig Santiago.dr mix adventurous sounds with traditional Brazilian feelings in a clever format. Vanessa Saft brings in her warm voice along with Safts sashaying guitar on “Sunshine Seas” and the electric percussion works wonders with Cyro’s voice on “Onda.” A bit of reggae pops up with the keyboards and alto sax on “Mystics” and the Caribbean feel continues on “Samba Jahmekya.” Pretty piano and percussion flow whimsically on “Lamb’s Bread” and the team sounds wonderfully lazy on “Growing Grow.” Clever and attractive!
