Trumpeter Matt Von Roderick attempts to bridge the gap between traditional jazz and modern urban sounds on this album filled with attitude. The cover has him with some women that look like they came out of a modern Roman bacchanal, while the “Parental Advisory” tells you that you’re not in lyrical Kansas anymore.
Von Roderick’s horn is actually impressive, delivering a modernized “What A Wonderful World” and with a warm vibrato on ”Baby Got Jazz.” You get a lot of dance floor tunes such as the hip, hip hopping “”Believe” and the urgently rocking “Shine” while a dash of old New Orleans pops up on “Undeniable.” Most of the rest of the album is electronic MTV styled R&B, such as “Let the Trumpet Talk” and “Seize the Night.” More for the crowd at the “Gentleman’s Club”, if you get my drift.
