Maggie Herron impresses on this album not just with her voice, but with the double barrel of composing all of the pieces here. She teams up with LA all stars Bill Cunliffe/p-arr, Grant Geissman/g, Abe Lagrimas/dr, Dean Taba/b, Alex Acuna/perc and horns by Ron Stout/tp, Bob McChesney/tb, Brian Scanlon/bs and Bob Sheppard/ts.
She’s got a husky, deep and breathy voice, and can get get poppy with “I Can’t Get To Sleep” or sauntering with Greissman’s picking on “ Seduction.” Cunliffe’s piano chimes on the salsa “Ritmo Latino” and Stout’s horn shines on the starry “Notre Amour.” She knows how to tell a story as the intimate trio of Geissman, Taba and Lagrimas get cozy on “Another Dose of You,’ andyou feel like you could take in the saucy duet between Heron and Taba on “I Lie Just A Little.” Less is more here.
