Here’s a pianist with a light and buoyant touch with the heart of a bebopper. Louis Herveaux leads a trio with Curtis Lundy/b and Terreon Gully/dr for a mix of originals and covers. There’s a spark of joy every time he hits the ivories, and is able to do nimble things on the bopping read of Cole Porter’s “Everything I Love” and shows hip chords on his own “One For Simus.” He throws in a dash of Monk on a take of “Blue Bossa” and with some creative undercurrents from Gully’s crisp stick work, floats over “Lundy’s Blues” like a long boarder. Lundy himself does some nice work on “Triadic Episode” and Gully gets assertive as he cracks the whip on “Swing’n Things.” All the while, Herveaux’s glassy touch is like Waterford Crystal, shining and sparkling with each tune. Classic jazz trio work with a smile.
