INTIMATE MUSINGS: Gene Pritsker-Peter Jarvis: Duo, Joan Jenrenaud: Visual Music

Sometimes it’s the quieter moments that draw you in. Here are a couple of cozy meetings.

Guitarist Gene Pritsker creates some duets with drummer Peter Jarvis for a mix of “controlled improvisations” and beyond. The teams creates some relaxed conversations of “Duo for Guitar and Drums” allowing space to be a sound, and melodic jousting takes place on Roundelay.” Some edgy space effects come across like a Gentle Giant album when Daniel Palkowski/key and Dan Cooper/b join the fray on “Uncycleable” and Pritsker has some fun with the pedals on “Interplay.” Planned, but casual.

Cellist Joan Jeanrenaud creates some pastoral moods with a rotating team of PC Munoz/perc, William Winant/vib and Dohee Lee/recorder-elec through 17 semi-interlocking  pieces. Yearning bows lead into dramatic slashes and dashes while pizzicato pickings team with African rhythms on “Prelude” and ”Spinario.” Dramatic cajons and brooding bows on “Dead Reckoning” and “Hypocrite” lead into dancing on ”Harlem Strut” while Bartokian chords during”Winter” and vibes with scratchy strings on “Puzzle” and “Moon Above” eventually take yo back where you started on “Ethereal Tree.” A lovely walk through the landscape.
