Natural perception? Almost “Extra Sensory Perception” as in Miles Davis’ classic album, as Tobias Meinhart brings together a quintet with Ingrid Jensen/tp, Yago Vazquez/p-key, Phil Donkin/b and Jesse Simpson/dr that evokes images of the loose swing of The Prince of Darkness’ Second Quintet. Meinhart’s tenor has a feel and sound similar to Wayne Shorter and George Coleman, rooted in the blues, but a little elliptical, as on the sleek “ Chord” and the rich and dreamy “Dark Eyes of Tomorrow” while Vazquez’s piano is thoughtful on the intro here and tensile with Donkin on “The Effort.” The rhythm team floats on the ballet like read of “You’re My Everything” and digs deep into a groove with Meinhart’s soprano on “Effortless Mind.” This is a thoughtful and creative read on a cherished mode of modern jazz.
