Intriguing tones and harmonies abound on this album, as Paul Hanson brings on the rarely played electric bassoon for the jazz context. He brings it together with clever arrangements by leader, composer and drummer Alan Hall, with a mix of bop and pastoral atmospheres on “Electrick” and and organically driven “Word By Word.” The team of John Gove/tb, Dillon Vado/vib, Greg Sankovich/key and Jeff Denson/b create some nice chamber sounds with space for bass and trombone on “Father’s and Sons” with vibes and bassoon melding well on the upbeat “In a Sense, Innocence.” Velvety impressionism creates sunset hues with guests Paul McCandless’s oboe, Joseph Hebert’s cello and Jonathan Alford’s added keyboard on the lovely “Returning” but the entire disc comes off as thick oil based brush strokes rather than a novelty act being tried out.
