Alto saxist Matt Criscuolo teams up with a post bop team of Tony Purrone/g, Will Calhoun /dr and Dave Anderson/b for a flexible mix of originals and standards. The leader has dark yet warm tone, and can use it for a melodic beauty with Purrone as on Wayne Shorter’s “Fall” or can heat it up on the soulful groove of “A Child’s Dream.” At times, things can get a bit chaotic, with a collision at rush hour on the frantic title track, while Calhoun drive with abandon on the edgy “Ronnie’s Tune.” A pair of duets between reeds and guitar veer between a caustic and haunting “West Haven Knock Around” and interesting bit of foreplay on “Prelude to a Kiss.” Wide ranging!
