Jeff Guthery: Black Paintings

Drummer Jeff Guthery takes you on a tour similar to Rod Serling’s Night Gallery on this free from mix of jazz and strings. The team of Kenny Werner/p, Georeg Garzone/ts, Bruno Raberg/b and David Fiuczynski/dr team up with the leader to juxtapose with the East Coast Scoring Orchestra conducted by Kristo Kondakeci through a mix of compositions and improvisations. Some of the material such as “Judith” “Goat” and ”Asmodea” have hints of 40s vintage movie soundtracks, but here they quickly devolve into various free form cacophonies and experiments. Haunting reeds and rhythms are found in “Atropos” while the “Quartet Improvisations” include some eerie piano work by Werner. Scratches that need itches are heard on “Two Monks” as Fiuczynski’s guitar mixes it up with a bunch of sticks and things, making you hope that there is a docent nearby.
