Bassist Rich Brown brings together a soulful and funky team of Luis Deniz/as, Chris Donnelly-Robi Botos/p, Larnell Lewis/dr Kevin Turcotte/tp, Kelly Jefferson/ts and Rosendo Chendy Leon/perc for a mix of R&B with jazz sensibilities. His electric bass lays down deep and lyrical grooves as on “The Lotus Ascnension” and Deniz’s alto uses these foundations for some melodic musings. Turcotte’s trumpet sears on the pulsating “The Etymology of Ouch” while Jefferson’s tenor goes deep on “Mahishmatish.” Botos’ fender gives some spacey effects on the moody “Window Seat” and some lithe percussion percolates on “Chant of the Exiled.” Through it all, Brown’s heart beat of a pace gets deep into the viscera.
