All that’s missing is the fried chicken on this documentary by Robert Mugge. What you get here is a cozy and intimate tour of Louisiana’s diverse music scene, including the North Counties, New Orleans and Baton Rouge and the Southwestern Swing. Mugge takes you to juke joints, church, a violin factory, cozy dance halls and the back porches of homes to let you see, hear and feel the essence of what makes the music here so earthy and enjoyable.
As far as the artists, well, you aren’t going to know a lot of them. These are the obscure stars like a Lomax recording. You’ll get some names like Kermit Ruffins and Henry Butler, but you’re going to be glad to be introduced to the Ever Ready Gospel Singers, Rev Gerald Lewis and Lil Alfred just to name a few. The music is as real as home made BBQ and just as tasty. If you like REAL music, this is the REAL thing!
