Nonch Harpin’: Native Sons

A mix of bluesy strings and jazzy reeds are held together by a swinging rhythm team on this album by Nonch Harpin. The band of Shawn Ellis/b, Andy Markham/g, Daniel Raynaud/p-key, Alan Spearot/dr and Chinh Tran/ss-ts make for some bluesy rock as B3 and beefy tenor team up on “Mr. Rocket Boots Celery Man” and Raynaud’s Hammond hums on “Li’l Antonin Scalia.” Tran’s soprano rides along Ellis’s bass line and Markham’s slick guitar on Melody For A Woodland Cabana” while some Middle Eastern atmospheres team up with Debussy-esque piano on the starry “Derrin-Do.” Funky back beats are in full effect on “The Street Joke” and By The Way, Frances” as Markham’s guitar adds some edgy effects. I nice mixture of flavors on a big blue plate of sounds.
