The simultaneous analysis of the music by pianists Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans may seem like an incongruous challenge, but Florian Weber gives it a go with Donny McCaslin/ts and Dan Weiss/dr. For the Evans side of life, Florian has conversant piano and keyboards on “Since We Met” and Weiss adds supple drums while McCaslin floats through “TTTT.” The tenorist gasps through “Spring Is Here” as Weber adds crystalline musings. On the Spherical spectrum, Weiss hits hard with the keys and tenor responding in kind on “Evidence” while his brushes caress under Weber’s delicate touch on a reflective “Ruby My Dear” while the title track has the three buoyantly bopping with delight.
Weber straddles the two worlds of bop icons with aplomb here.
