The team of Tony Levin/stick-voc, Pat Mastelotto/dr-perc, Markus Reuter/g-key give a tribute to the influential fusion group King Crimson, and who better to do it with than with KC alumnus David Cross at the violin? He was with Fripp’s band during the mid seventies, and songs from those two highly important albums are reference on this pair of 2015 concerts in Tokyo, Japan.
Moody synthesizers and keyboards fill the room with tensile guitars on “Opening Soundscape” and Reurte taps into his inner Fripp on the rumbling and rocking “ Improv-Blacklight.” An electric read of Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite” is replete with hawking ravens, and relentless rhythms mix with guitar on Fripp’s Breathless.” Material from Larks Tongues in Aspic, Red and Starless and Bible Black still sound exciting and fresh with ”The Talking Drum” filled with flying sparks, “Industry” a moaning rubato and “Larks Tongues…” still crazy after all these years.
