Saxist Russ Nolan is caught live at the Firehouse 12 in swinging Connecticut with a modern team of Mike Eckroth/p, Daniel Foose/b and Brian Fishler/dr. Eight of the nine pieces are originals, and the one cover, “Thelonious” has a soulful arrangement of the Monk piece. Nolan’s tenor tone is thick and palpable and it works well on the cascading and tricky “Stravinsky’s Mambo” and the pulsating drive of “Sanctuary From the Ordinary.” He goes bel canto on a luscious tango on “Take Two” and fills the room during the warm “Ballad For One.” On soprano, he glows through some restless mingling between piano and bass on”Memorial Day” Fishler’s stop and start on “Slightly Off” keeps everyone on their toes. The pulsating and exciting Latin tune “Song in Search of a Ringtone” closes off the enjoyable evening, making this another addition in Nolan’s impressively growing catalogue.
