Julian Shore: Which Way Now?

Julian Shore shows his intelligent mix of composition, arranging and keyboard skills here as he mixes chamber sounds with jazz on this recent release. He’s got a core team of Gilad hekselman/g, Dayna Stephens/ts, Aidan Carrll/b and Colin Starnahan/dr for most of the pieces. In addition, you get some reeds, voices and some extra bass and percussion to increase the textures and dept of  pieces such as the penetrating “Alpine.” The regular team creates reflective atmospheres as on “Our Story Begins..” and Shore’s piano creates ripples on the lovely title track. Train rhythms take you on a daydream during “back Home” while Shore goes solo on a gracious “Con Alma” and teams with Noah Preminger’s clarinet on an intimate and luscious “All Heart.” The album is filled with nostalgic moments and interludes, as well as folksy sounds that make you feel like you’re taking a walk back in time. A nice day trip.
