This four songed ep has leader Gordon Beeferman playing piano and Hammond B3 as he leads a team of Peter Hess/as-fl-bcl, Anders Nilsson/g, James Ilgenfritz/b and Adam Gold/dr through a four part suite. The songs themselves mostly come across as jazz versions of modern classical a la Stravinsky on “Part 2” or “Part 4” while the repetitive themes and static rhythms leave no room for improvisation and give hints of Mussorgsky’s “Baba Yaga.” You keep thinking that there will at least be a variation of the theme or rhythm, but it’s reminiscent of the line by CS Lewis, “Always winter, but never Christmas.”
