If you want more nuance than swing, check out these two releases.
Both David Friesen and Glen Moore play bass and piano on this collection of duets and solos. Friesen plays a Hemage bass and Moore a regular acoustic one, and they emphasize the rumbling conversations of the strings on the babbling “Still Waters” and the agile “Caravan.” Friesen’s piano is pensive with Moore on”Soft as Silk” and when the roles are reversed, a bop feel is created on “Kontrast.” Quiet and reflective.
Pianist Michael Wollny creates a trio with Christian Weber/b and Eric Schaefer/dr on imporessionistic pieces such as “Metzengerstein” and the delicate and seriously mooded tunes such as “Der Wanderere” and “White Moon.” There is a tensile delicacy on most of the material, with a heavy thud on the somber “Questions in a World of Blue” and holding a somber mood on the pulsing “Motette No. 1.” Gotta make sure there are no distracting sounds around when you take this one in.
