LOST TREASURE…Fred Hersch with Charlie Haden & Joey Baron: Sarabande

This re-issue of Fred Hersch’s 1986 album is a gorgeous meeting with bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Joey Baron. The pianist decided to re-release it in dedication to the memory of the deceased bassist, and it’s a testament to the timeless qualities of music that each three musicians accomplish. Hersch is in gloriously romantic form here, with a lyrical “I Have Dreamed,” relaxed on the title track and gently chiming on the bossa’d “Child’s Song.” Baron rides a delicious cymbal on “What Is This Thing Called Love?” and shows nimble brush work on “This Heart of Mine.” The three create rich geometric shapes on the spacious “Blue In Green” and bounce with delight on “Enfant” while flexing some muscle on “Cadences.”

Hersch is one to rarely look back, so that in itself is reason enough to give this one a second, and third, listen.
