ELLING’S PIANIST COMES FORTH…Laurence Hobgood Trio: Honor Thy Fathers

Best known for his collaborations with famed vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist/arranger  Laurence Hobgood has been quietly creating an impressive catalogue all his own. This latest trio effort with John Patitucci/b and Kendrick Scott/dr is an elegant collection of originals and covers which create a rich mix of romanticism and intellect. He likes effusive and dreamy solo intros here, with a beaut that begs for a candelabra on his own “Sanctuary,” while his teamwork on “The Waltz” and “Tryptich” is eloquent and stately without becoming sterile. He takes you on a nostalgic journey on a tender and buoyant read of “Straighten Up and Fly Right” as well as a cozy “Give Me The Simple Life” whereas his arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “If It’s Magic” is incandescent. Like sonic flickers from a fireplace.
