STOMPING! The Hot Jazz Jumpers: The Very Next Best Thing

A mix of trad and New Orleans come together for a festive cd/dvd from the team of Nick Russo/g-banj-res, Betina Hershey/vc-g, Miles Griffith/voc, David Pleasant/dr, Essiet Essiet-Mamadou Ba/b and a roving horn section.  Two step heaven and Gordon Au’s trumpet team up with Betina’s Hershey fervent voice on “Back Home Again In Indiana” and she growls deep and dark with Russo’s banjo on an ominous read of “Sweet Georgia Brown.” A trip to the delta comes with guitar and harmonica on “Freight Train” and some African guitar licks  provide an attractive remake of “You Are My Sunshine.” Griffith sings on the easy swing of “In A Mellow Tone” and Hershey shows a nice lazy stride on “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” The two vocalists go back and forth as they mix church and calypso on “This Little Light of Mine” and an aria of “Manha de Carnaval” has Griffith going bel canto. Lots of fun with the frets here.
